Why Doesn’t My Perfume Smell Like it Used to?

Posted on

Have you driven yourself crazy trying to locate your favourite perfume, only to find that it doesn’t smell like it used to? Don’t blame your nose. There are actually a number of reasons why fragrance scents change over time.

It’s been reformulated. This comes as a surprise to many fragrance-lovers, but this has actually always been the case—one of the industry’s best-kept secrets. Most fragrances that have been around a while, like Chanel No. 5, get reformulated every decade or so. So technically, it’s not exactly the same fragrance. While it does try to achieve the same top, heart, and base notes, some ingredients may vary because they either don’t exists anymore, are found to be a hazardous, or have been replaced with synthetic substitutes due to consumer preferences for vegan or more natural ingredients. Other times, ingredients are changed in order to keep up with current trends.

It’s an eau de toilette/parfum. Check the bottle twice. Perhaps you accidentally purchased the eau de toilette/parfum version of your perfume—or vice versa. The concentration of essences varies in each type of fragrance, so you may have ended up with a lighter, less potent version. If you want to know more about the differences perfume, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and eau de cologne, read our blog on the topic.

It’s from another region. Most people aren’t aware of this, but the same fragrances are altered slightly to appeal to their target market. So if you purchased your perfume in Hong Kong, it’s likely a different version than the North-American one. To guarantee you get your exact scent, it’s best you stick with shopping in your region.

It’s from a bad batch. It happens to the best of us. We’ve purchased a lemon car or refrigerator and vow never to buy from that brand again! But the fact of the matter is, these incidents happen at random, no matter what you’re purchasing. It’s possible that your bottle came from a batch that just didn’t come out right. If this happens, contact the brand or company you purchased from and let them know. They’ll be grateful they were warned before dozens of other customers called to complain about the same issue.
